PORT HARCOURT—The two months emergency declared by the Rivers State Police Command against violent crimes came to an end, yesterday, with the arrest of 214 armed robbery suspects and recovery of 152 arms.
He said most of them were already facing prosecution in court. He said his command also arrested 107 suspected cultists, noting that some confessed to being members of dreaded cult groups such as Dey Gbam, Dey Well, Iceland and Vikings.Speaking on the operations of the command, outgoing Commissioner of Police, Mr Chris Ezike, at the headquarters of the Police command in Port Harcourt, said 638 ammunition and 312 cartridges were among items recovered from suspects, adding that 41 different brands of vehicles , cash sums were also recovered from the suspects.
The Police chief who said he would resume in Edo State today as the new Commissioner of Police, said his command lost two Police officers during encounter with robbers within the period, while three suffered gunshot injuries.
He described the emergency against violent crimes as a huge success, saying it had brought crimes such as kidnapping and cultism to a minimum level.
