A group, the Peoples Democratic Party Youth Development Front (PDPYDF) has berated the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, for criticising President Goodluck Jonathan over the seeming delay in the implementation of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) report on Ogoniland.
Speaking after an emergency general meeting of the group in Asaba, Delta State, the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Tony Bode, said Wike’s comment was unfortunate and embarrassing to a president, who had shown strong commitment to the clean-up of the Niger Delta environment.
Wike had during the 21st anniversary celebration of Ogoni Day in Bori, headquarters of Khana Local Government Area, called on the president to put hands on deck towards the clean-up of Ogoniland.
But Bode, while reacting to the comment, reminded the minister that the environmental challenges facing Ogoniland and the Niger Delta region predates President Jonathan, whose administration ensured the conclusion of the report.
“The delay in its implementation is due to certain technicalities but Ogonis and indeed Nigerians will soon experience our efforts towards cleaning up the area,” Bode declared.
According to him, public officers should guide their utterances especially on issues relating to the highest office in the land, insisting that “is either Wike is not conversant with the agenda of the president on the UNEP report or unknowingly being mischievous.”
Bode disclosed that the group had began mobilising youths in the country to support President Jonathan for a second term in order for him to continue with his good works.
While dismissing the threat that Nigeria will be on fire if Jonathan contest, the group said such threats were child’s play and should not bother Mr. President.
