The Rivers state Government says it has concluded plans to commission additional 500 Model Primary Schools already completed by the administration across the state.
The State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, who gave this indication at the New Year state banquet, last Wednesday, at Government House, Port Harcourt, also said that additional 70 primary health centres would be commissioned soon.
“We told our people that we shall build about 750 Model Primary schools across the state, but right now, about 500 have been completed. We shall commission some of the schools this January”, Amaechi said.
He further said that the government would commence the commissioning of additional 70 primary health centres in 70 communities in 70 days to bridge the gap of healthcare needs at the grassroots.
On power, Amaechi said his administration has built sub-injection transmission stations in strategic locations across the state for effective power distribution.
In recognition of their hard work, dedication and show of patriotism to the state, Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi used the forum to honour some past administrators and eminent citizens of Rivers State to commemorate the New Year celebrations.
Some of the eminent personalities honoured by Governor Amaechi include; former Military Administrator, General Zamani Lekwot (rtd), Alabo T. O. Graham-Douglas, Former Minister of Aviation, Chief Ombo Isokrari and Several others, including late Ken Saro-Wiwa, late Harold Dappa Biriye, Professor Kay Williamson, Mr. Albert Badey and Professor Otonti Nduka.
Governor Amaechi said considering the developmental strides and historical legitimacy of the activities of government since 1967 when Rivers State was created, there was need to accord honour to deserving citizens who promoted political stability, transparency and good governance.
Amaechi, shortly after exchanging pleasantries with his guests at the state New Year Banquet, expressed satisfaction with the way and manner Rivers people and residents were supporting his administration.
The State Chief Executive also prayed God for the protection and safety of Rivers people throughout his tenure of office.
“I pray God to protect and safeguard you all in the New Year 2014 so we can together build our nascent democracy for the good of our dear state. I also thank our traditional rulers for their enviable roles in bringing peace and harmony to the people”, Amaechi said.
