The National Union of Ogoni Students (NUOS INT’L), USA has prepared to wrestle down the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration Hydrocarbon Pollution Restoration Project (HYPREP). The decision came on the floor during a meeting session the group held last week as part of effort to assess situation of things in Ogoniland.
Moving the motion to take on the agency, a member described HYPREP as not only deceitful but a tool the Nigerian government and Shell are using to clear the way for Shell re-entry into Ogoniland. The decision, which took NUOUS congress more than 35 minutes to agree upon, finally received approval from all members present.
One year after Nigerian president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan received the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) report on Ogoni devastated environment, an agency called Hydrocarbon Pollution Restoration Project (HYPREP) was created against every suggestion UNEP stipulated in its report. According to the report, UNEP has suggested among others the establishment of an environmental institution that will empower Ogoni indigenes to control environmental issues in their area. Instead, a deceitful agency was created. An Ogoni decent was appointed as national coordinator to coordinate affairs of the agency, a thing NUOS views as a calculated attempt by Jonathan to sideline UNEP report.
More so, ever since the Mrs. Joy Nunyie-Okunnu’s coordinated agency was created, it has done nothing but erecting threatening signposts all over Ogoniland and creating ways for Shell comeback to Ogoni. Joy, the group suggests, should be called to order.
“There is nothing HYPREP would do in Ogoniland. HYPREP is deceitful and a calculated attempt by the Goodluck Jonathan government to silence the UNEP report. Joy, herself should be called to order.” The group said.
