Gov. Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers has said that the “inability of elected leaders to provide adequate security for the citizenry is an impeachable offence”.
The governor stated this on Sunday in Houston at a town hall meeting with indigenes of the state living in the U.S.
“The first offence governors commit is when they are unable to provide adequate security for the people.
“This is because the first oath taken by elected leaders is to protect life and property. It is the responsibility of the government to provide security to the people, ‘’ Amaechi said.
The governor, who had earlier met with some foreign investors, also blamed poverty and lack of education as the cause of insecurity in some parts of the country.
“I hate to see people building high fences in the name of providing themselves with security,’’ Amaechi said.
He stressed: “it is as a result of this position, that the Rivers government has achieved remarkable milestones in providing and maintaining law and order by working hard to ensure security for the people.
“We achieved the modestsuccesses recorded by adopting a zero-tolerance attitude towards social vices right from the grassroot through education and elimination of poverty by empowerment and skills aquisition.”
The governor noted that he would continue to motivate, train and retrain the police force and other security agents in the state on crime prevention and detection.
He disclosed that the state had established a centralised rapid response call control centre with state-of-the-arts equipment and helicopters for effective monitoring.
“ In Rivers state, we have sustained security achievements via the introduction of more modern and reliable real-time security equipment like CCTV’s for streets and other public areas, as we hit greater energy efficiency.’’ he said.
