Ogoni Day 2013: MOSOP Nebraska Chapter To Celebrate At The State Capital, Lincoln
Friday and Saturday, Jan. 4th and 5th Friday rally, 4pm at the State Capitol Saturday convention, 10am at the WSI Hall, 1430 N 10th Street, Lincoln The Ogoni Day Commemoration and Annual Convention will take place on Saturday, January 5th, with a rally kicking off the event on Friday. The Nebraska Chapter of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) is putting on the event, and we urge you attend as it is expected to be an awesome event with a great turnout. The Ogoni people of Nigeria have long fought against oil companies (namely Royal Dutch Shell) in the Ogoniland area of the Niger Delta. The Delta is an oil rich region that has brought oppression, economic injustice, and environmental degradation to the people who live there–by both the state and its oil company allies. MOSOP has been a catalyst for organizing for the rights of the Ogoni people and has earned solidarity for their cause around the world. The first Ogoni day was held 20 years ago in Nigeria, and it drew a crowd of over 300,000. It also prompted major government crackdowns which left hundreds dead. But through perseverence and inspiring activism, MOSOP and the Ogonis were able to get Shell off of their land and reduce the drilling that takes place there. The Ogoni in Nebraska have stood in solidarity with those of us who have been fighting the Keystone XL pipeline, and we look forward to commemorating this day with them. We hope to see you at the State Capitol on Friday, Jan. 4th at 4 pm, and at the convention on Saturday!
