FG intent on not executing UNEP report – MOSOP

THE Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has accused the Federal Government of plotting to kill the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP)’s report on environmental pollution in Ogoniland.

The movement, which stated this on Saturday during the commemoration of the execution of the Ogoni Nine, including writer and environmentalist, Ken Saro-Wiwa, also demanded investigation into the killing of the Ogoni Four, which served as prelude to the execution in 2005.

Stating these in his address to mark the occasion, chairman of the MOSOP Provisional Council (MPC), Professor Ben Naanen, called on the Federal Government to take steps towards an immediate implementation of the UNEP Report.

According to him, Ogoni people were really concerned about the Federal Government’s lack of seriousness towards the report’s implementation, which he said could force the people to take further action if this persisted.

“As a result, on behalf of the Ogoni people, MOSOP is calling on the Nigerian government to take immediate steps to implement the UNEP report, the pre-emptive set up of HYPREP notwithstanding. The Ogoni people want to see action. It is a major concern that the Federal Government does not seem to have made the required financial provision for the implementation. To all intents and purposes, the government appears to have made up its mind to kill the UNEP report through financial starvation and other bureaucratic means. Consequently, the Ogoni community will, once more, be forced to take its case to the international community, if the present inaction should continue.

“MOSOP is also concerned that the Ogoni people are hardly benefitting from the Niger Delta struggle for which the Ogoni martyrs gave their precious lives. Through acts of omission or commission, Ogoni has been suffering increased marginalisation from the government in Abuja,” he said.
