The Rivers State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN has described as escapist the flimsy excuse given by the Amaechi administration over the collapse of the Airforce Base Bus Stop section of the Port Harcourt/Aba Expressway Flyover linking the Olu Obasanjo Link Road.
The ACN in a statement issued and signed by its publicity secretary Jerry Needam said government is a continuum and must not accord significance to projects based on who initiated or constructed them as the Amaechi led-government appears to be doing with regard to the collapsed over-head bridge.
Jerry Needam said if the relevant authorities had taken proactive measures, upon noticing cracks on the flyover or finding out through soil test as it is claims that the construction of the bridge was faulty, the collapse would have been averted and the people saved the embarrassment and trauma occasioned by the Sunday incident.
The statement further noted that the issue is not under which administration the flyover was constructed or by which company but what was done to avert the impending danger and save lives.
The ACN spokesman, Jerry Needam advised that every democratic and responsible government must be ready to take responsibility for its actions and inactions, as much as it takes credit for successes.
Rather than waste more time and resources, defending its obvious failure in this regard, Jerry Needam advised Gov. Amaechi to swing into action immediately to rehabilitate the ever busy and important flyover.
Apart from the collapsed bridge which the incumbent administration claims was not constructed by it, the ACN challenged Gov. Amaechi to pinpoint one specific road across the state that has not been washed away by the rains.
“The earlier this government embarks on concrete actions the better for the Rivers people and residents in the state. Bogus and empty claims will not and have ever helped matters”, the ACN remarked.
Signed:
Jerry Needam, JP
Publicity Secretary Action Congress of Nigeria

Administrator’s comment (excerpt from OgoniNews): Governor Amaechi’s government was not in place to supervise the project at the time the collapsed bridge was constructed and so may not be blamed completely for the collapse. However, government has a duty to penalize companies responsible for this level of failures. Ogoninews will recommend a total blacklist of Bulletine Construction, the company which handled the project, and suggest a complete reconstruction of the project.
