RSUST students fear academic setback over ASUU’s call for strike

As the bickering between the management of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) and Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) continues, students of the university have appealed to both sides to urgently resolve their differences.

ASUU had withdrawn its members from classes since last Monday in protest of perceived lack of due process in the re-appointment of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barineme Fakae by Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

However, a cross-section students who spoke with Nation Evening Express yesterday, called for a quick resolution of the impasse, to avert another disruption in the academic calendar.

The appeal came against the backdrop of claims by the RSUST Public Relations Officer, Mr. Desmond Wosu, that the school authority has not received any strike notice from ASUU. He said there was no disagreement with ASUU over any issue. Apparently wary of the implication of yet another strike on their academic pursuit, the students charged the management to face facts and resolve the matter with the academic staff union.

Miss Chinyere Ndah, a 400 level student said: “Please I don’t want another strike again in this school; strike is what has kept me till this time when all my mates elsewhere have graduated. So, I want ASUU to discuss with the government and end the issue.”

Boniface Ngor, a 200 level student, blamed the government for the latest strike and advised it to get its act together and dialogue wit ASUU.

But in an apparent case of different strokes, Douglas Faribo said the strike would afford him the opportunity “to hustle for money,” even though he expressed sadness that the incessant strikes have turned the institution “into a secondary school.”
