The Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers of Ogoni in Rivers
State, has dissociated itself from the purported autonomy declaration of
Goodluck Diigbo, a factional leader of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni
People (MOSOP).
Speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt, spokesman of the group, Mene Suanu T. Y Baridam said it was of utmost necessity to state categorically that Goodluck Diigbo was on his own and that the royal fathers were not in his support.
According to him, Diigbo’s intention is to worsen the lives
of the ordinary people who are already impoverished over the several years of
neglect, and wondered why such a person would want to lead by proxy.
“We want to make it clear that the August 2, 2012
declaration of autonomy for Ogoni is not the position of the people.
Therefore, the Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers
hereby dissociates itself from that declaration.
“If Diigbo loves his people and wants to lead in any form,
then, he should come home. You cannot lead the people through the internet.
While he is overseas drinking tea and watching television, the people he wants
to lead cannot afford a full square meal per day.
‘The action is condemnable and of no effect to the people of
Ogoni.
“We stand by the Ogoni Bill of Rights submitted to the
Federal Government in Nigeria by the late environmentalist, Ken Saro-Wiwa and
the creation of Bori State.
“We also support the Federal Government’s intention to carry
out the cleanup of Ogoniland based on the UNEP report and must be done
accordingly’, he said.
Mene Baridam, who is the Gbenemene Bagha, re-iterated the
need for the Ogoni people to come together as one indivisible entity and not be
distracted by any one or group seeking attention as that is not the desire of
the people.
