Shell’s Claim on Ogoni Medical Programme Further Exposes the Company’s Lies – MOSOP

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People says Shell should stop lying about its real motives in Ogoniland and admit its fraudulent past in the community. Chairman of the MOSOP Caretaker committee Chief Emmanuel Nkala made this assertion in a statement in Port Harcourt yesterday.

Chief Nkala said “I do not understand how Shell’s global budget for 2 years will be $1billion and the company’s budget for a one week mobile health care service in an area the company abandoned 18 years ago will be $500million.”

The MOSOP leader said Shell should stop lying about its relationship with the Ogoni people and acknowledge that the company had long been rejected by the Ogoni people.

He also said: Shell should not stop at saying the company is spending $500million in Ogoni, about half the amount needed to begin the massive cleanup recommended by the United Nations. He wants the company to give a breakdown on where and how the money is been spent, noting that the amount is more than enough to establish five large general hospitals in the four local governments in Ogoni.

“As much as we know, Shell connived with some people to do a mobile medical test in Gokana, Khana and some two other locations and this was for a week. I do not know how such skeletal exercise could cost more than what it takes the Rivers State government to service over 200 health centers in one year.

“And what does Shell have to show for all these? Ogoni people are dieing by the day due to the company’s pollution records and the company still lives in the habit of lying about their Ogoni community programmes.

The MOSOP leader said this claim further exposes the lying nature of Shell whose history of corporate irresponsibility in Ogoniland is simply shameful and disgusting.
