Probe Shell’s Expenditure on Nigeria’s Security – MOSOP

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, MOSOP, wants the government to probe the security expenditure of Shell in Nigeria between 2007 and 2009. This was the position of Ogoni kingdom leaders and coordinators after a meeting in Port Harcourt today(Aug. 22/2012)

The MOSOP leaders said that the claim by a London-based pressure group, Platform, stating that Royal Dutch Shell spent almost 40 percent of its $1 billion global security budget, about $383million, between 2007 and 2009 in Nigeria calls for serious investigation.

In a statement made available to Ogoninews, and signed on behalf of the group by the Chairman of the Forum, Mr. Frank Jonah, the MOSOP Kingdom Coordinators said Shell needs to explain its role in funding Nigeria security personnel as reported by the London-based group.

The group also questioned Shell’s role in funding military operations in Nigeria saying that “Shell’s history in the Niger Delta questions the commitment of the company to respect the rights of Nigerian citizens who are usually the victims of Shell-sponsored military operations.”
