A repeat of the incident of April 1994 which led to the death of Ogoni activists and celebrated leader Ken Saro-Wiwa was yesterday averted in Ogoniland as no one was reported dead after thugs invaded the venue of a meeting called by the leaders of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) forcing people to run for their safety.
About 200 leaders and representatives of chapter heads of MOSOP had gathered in Beeri town in Khana Local government area of Rivers State to discuss issues relating to the forceful takeover of Ogoni farmlands by the Rivers State government and the recent incursions of Shell Petroleum into Ogoniland.
Midway into the meeting, some armed youths numbering about 30 arrived the venue of the meeting and demanded that the meeting should not continue.
Ogoninews investigations reveal that no one was injured although the meeting could not continue as a result of the incident.
Recall that on July 29, the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) announced a new leadership at an Ogoni congress in Okwali in the Nyokhana region of Ogoniland accusing the former leadership of holding secret meetings with Shell and doing nothing about the issue of Ogoni refugees who have been forced out of their land by the government to establish a banana farm.
When contacted on phone, the Chairman of the MOSOP caretaker committee did not take his calls.
