The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People has called a national prayer for the Ogoni people of south-eastern Nigeria to avert a humanitarian crisis currently affecting much of the Ogoni population as a result of the decision of the Rivers State Government to take over 2,000 hectares of farmlands in the area for the set-up of a banana farm.
Speaking yesterday in Bori after a botched leaders meeting due to an invasion of the venue by angry youths who claim they were not informed of the meeting before it was convened, Chairman of the Forum of MOSOP Coordinators said the only and most appropriate option at this time is for all Ogoni people who are concerned about the predicament of the Ogoni people to go into prayers for the Ogoni.
He said the prayers should commence immediately and will last for 40days beginning today, September 2.
Specifically, the national prayer is called for God’s intervention to save over 30,000 Ogoni farmers who are been subjected to death by the government plan to acquire over 2,000 hectares of farmlands for the set-up of a banana project in the area. He maintained that the project will deprive poor Ogoni farmers of land that primarily sustains them through subsistence farming.
He also noted that if the land is taken as planned, Ogoniland will experience unprecedented food scarcity and the people will be forced to death.
Mr. Frank also called on all lovers of peace and freedom the world over to pray that Shell’s design to return to Ogoniland be frustrated. His words: “A company that has done so much damage to our people does not deserve a return to Ogoniland.”
