Poem: The Caged Virgin By Komene Famaa

The Caged Virgin

(By Komene Famaa)

A charismatic figure of arresting, hypnotizing

And tantalizing beauty

Astonishing, creative, humorous restraints

A potent social critic

Who cannot be tolerated

In her home state

An unflinching advocate

Of women rights and Religious freedom

Elegant, Distinguished, Reviled

Political Super hero

A champion of liberation and free Speech

With gimlet pair of eyes

Recounts the evolution of her beliefs

Possess ironclad wills

With extra-ordinary resolve

To fight injustice done

In the name of religion

Survived civil war

And female mutilation and brutal beatings

Lost a colleague and freedom to senseless killing

And religious extremism

On an open public and busy road

Forced into an unacceptable marriage

Society did not love and approve of.
