RIVERS: Abe wins Amaechi at Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has overruled the judgement of the Court of Appeal that set aside the ruling of Justice Chiwendu Nworgu, restraining the All Progressives Congress (APC) from further conducting congresses in Rivers State.

The judgment of the Supreme Court favours the faction of Senator Magnus Abe of the APC in Rivers state, against the one led by a former governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi.

According to the Supreme Court, allowing the APC to retain the outcome of the ward, local government and state congresses conducted, would amount to a reward for disobedience.

It would be recalled that the Appeal Court’s decision was handed down in June, overturning the order of Justice Chiwendu Nworgu against conduct of the ward, Local government and state congresses of the APC in Rivers State.

The Abe faction were not happy with the ruling, making them to approach the Supreme Court.

The ruling of the apex court may throw spanners in the works of the APC, who had submitted names of candidates for the 2019 general elections to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) based on the primaries conducted on the basis of the congresses in contention.

The APC In the state had been further divided over Abe’s complaints concerning the primaries and had approached the court. But Amaechi’s faction had accused him of conniving with the state governor, Nyesome Wike to destabilize the party ahead of the 2019 elections.
