Ogoni assembly bemoans spate of killing by cultists

PORT HARCOURT— Ogoni General Assembly in Rivers State has raised the alarm over the increase in the killing of farmers in Ogoni communities by suspected cultists.

The assembly, yesterday, at its meeting organised by Ken Saro-Wiwa Associates, KSWA, noted that women were the most affected by the development in Sii and Gwere communities of Khana Local Government Area of the state. The forum also resolved not to allow Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, resume operation in Ogoni after its activities 22 years ago that allegedly led to loss of lives and devastation of the environment.

National Coordinator of KSWA, Chief Gani Topba, called on the state Commissioner of Police to intervene in the development, adding that farming activities were affected by the killings. He said: “We are calling on the police to help save Ogoni women who are being killed on their way to or in their farms.

The state Commissioner of Police should invite the leadership of those two communities, Sii and Gwara, and fish out the killers who are attacking farmers. “We are worried when we see Ogoni people killing themselves. We must join hands  to stop the killings in our land. As Ogoni people, we will confirm whether the security personnel here are doing their work or not. If they are not,  we will write that they be transferred. “Any youth who carries arm should be arrested and prosecuted for Ogoni to have peace.”
