Rivers Scholarship students risk deportation

More than 100 Rivers State sponsored students are at risk of being deported from the United Kingdom anytime from next week, due to the revocation of their student visas by the various universities being owed two years tuition fees by the state government .

Six of the students have been protesting and camping outside the Nigerian High Commission, since Wednesday, and some slept outside the commission as they had also been kicked out by their landlords. “We slept outside,” one of the dejected students told The Guardian on Thursday afternoon, when this reporter visited.

Spokesman of the protesting students, Kevin Nwoke – an engineering undergraduate of the university of Huddersfield – told The Guardian, “the university initially gave us 60 days deadline, before revoking our student visas and kicking us out.”

Computer systems engineering student, Darrick George lent credence to it, saying that “ the deadline to remain in this country will expire in five days ,” and after that, they risk deportation . “We are technically illegals now,” one of them noted.

The Guardian asked if the Rivers State governor or any member of the House of Assembly is aware of the situation, Nwoke and his colleagues said, “nobody could get through to the governor. He’s keeping his number private.”
