Apple unveils the iPhone 5S with Touch ID fingerprint sensor and A7 64-bit chip

Set to ship on 20 September priced from £549

HARDWARE DESIGNER Apple unveiled its flagship iPhone 5S at an event in San Francisco on Tuesday, complete with a new A7 chip and that long-rumoured Touch ID sensor.

The handset looks near identical to the firm’s last-generation iPhone 5, although its specs have been revamped, with the device packing Apple’s new A7 chipset based on 64-bit architecture, which Apple claims means gaming can be up to “five times faster” than on the previous model. Apple’s also keen to point out that the iPhone 5S is the world’s first 64-bit phone, having been using to playing catch-up with devices running Google’s Android software.

This processor comes paired with iOS 7 – which has been optimised for the 64bit chip – and an M7 co-processor, which measures the accelerometer, compass and gyroscope to keep a continuous track of subtle movements for improved motion control within apps. As for battery life, Apple says that 3G talk time is around 10 hours, up from eight on the iPhone 5, with up to 250 hours on standby.

Perhaps the handset’s stand-out feature however is the built-in fingerprint scanner, known as its Touch ID Sensor, which sees Apple looking to further boost iPhone security. Apple said that the sensor – which comes built straight into the home button – offers a secure new way to unlock devices. Apple added that the sapphire sensor will be able to recognise multiple fingerprints, and works in any orientation.

The camera in the iPhone 5S has been improved too, with the handset featuring a new five-element Apple-designed lens with an f2.2 aperture. Although it remains an 8MP snapper, Apple has equipped the phone with a sensor that’s 15 percent larger to let more light into images. A dual-LED flash has also been added, and Apple has unveiled a bunch of new photography features, such as auto image stablisation and a built-in burst mode.

As expected, the handset will be available in a new ‘Gold’ colour too, with the firm also swapping out the current black model for a new ‘Space Grey’ theme. The white model remains unchanged.

The iPhone 5S will be released in the UK on 20 September with the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models priced at £549, £629 and £709 respecitvely. Pre-orders will open on 13 September.

Apple also unveiled the cheaper iPhone 5C on Tuesday, aimed at tackling the budget Android smartphone market.
