The Rivers State Government has given automatic employment to 36 doctors that graduated from the Kuban Medical School in Russia. The 36 medical doctors were beneficiaries of the Rivers State scholarship scheme to study medicine in Russia.
The Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Dame Alice Lawrence-Nemi stated this in her office when the medical doctors visited her on their return from Russia. She said Governor Rotimi Amaechi, mandated the Ministry of Education to forward the names of the medical doctors to the Ministry of Health for immediate employment.
Alice Lawrence-Nemi also said that the state Government needs the services of the medical doctors at the sick bays in the model primary and secondary schools and also the model health centres in the state. “I have mandated the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry to have your names and addresses becausethe Governor has asked the Ministry to hand you over to the Ministry of Health so that you can start work immediately and also ensure that you get your employment letters,” she said.
Lawrence-Nemi revealed that the Rivers State Government has increased the number of scholarships given to students since the inception of Governor Amaechi-led administration. She stated that the state government through the Ministry of Education and Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) has awarded scholarships to students to study in different countries like Canada, Russia etc.
She revealed that many overseas scholarship students who have graduated in their various fields of study have been employed by the state government. The Education boss noted that the Government has improved the health sector in the state by building model health centres equipped with modern facilities across the state.
She commended Drs Nwankwo Chinalurum, Nzokuru Cynthia and Princewill Matthew who made distinction in their courses and tasked the doctors to give their best while practising their professional careers.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Dr. Richard Ofuru said he is pleased to see the medical doctors who he conducted their screening exercise seven years ago, return as professionals.
He advised the medical doctors to take their work very seriously so as to justify government’s invested in them. He noted that the government will be willing to do more if they give their best during their one year housemanship and the NYSC service year.
Earlier, the spokesperson for the returning medical doctors, Dr Manoah Edwin commended the Rivers State Governor Amaechi for giving them the scholarship.
