Ogoni Autonomy– A Right Not A Privilege - KorneBari Nwike

Hell was let loose in Teyor Kaani, an Ogoni community in Khana local government area of Rivers state as suspected Deegbam cultists invaded the community terrorizing people with impunity. It was gathered that the operation which started at about 9 am of Saturday, August 31, 2013, left a 17 year old girl(name with held), humiliated and psychologically traumatized. The damsel was allegedly gang-raped by the rampaging gang of cultists, and the sad event occurred along the Kaani-Bori road on her way to market in Bori. The girl, not knowing that there was danger in the community innocently walked into an ambush by the heavily armed gang of cultists believed to be from Gbor Kaani. A community source lamented that the ambush was lain for the purpose of attacking people of Teyor Kaani.

The gang-rape group assaulted the girl until she fell into coma before they left her, thinking she was dead. She was later rushed to a nearby hospital where efforts were made to revive her. However, as at press time, she was stil in coma.

After the raping of the girl, one Jonah Nkie and 3 others who were on their way to Bori was also allegedly manhandled by the gang and in the process sustained serious injuries.

Daado Pueba, a tailor from Gbor Kaani, was shot by the Deegbam boys for daring to ask them why they blocked a road at the entrance to his compound. He told them to dismantle the road block to enable him have access to his compound. It was also gathered the alleged cultists had made undisclosed financial demands on Peueba who of course refused to yield.

It was learnt that at about 5pm same Saturday, the rampaging cultists invaded Kedum community of Teyor Kaani, shooting sporadically and terrorizing people. Women were beaten up, monies stolen, hand bags and handsets snatched. Teyor community was said to have been deserted as there was no effort by security operatives to arrest the situation. Sources from the community have accused security of aiding the rampaging cultists as their alleged sponsor was said to be an ex-Police officer.

Community sources which named the alleged sponsor of the cult group accused the former police man of threatening to destroy Teeyor for the people’s rejection of his bid to occupy the Menebua Kaani stool which became vacant at the death of the former occupant. The community sources further accused the alleged sponsor of being behind the crises in Teyor Kaani .

Non-security sources in the have disclosed that the Deewell group, another armed cult group, operating in Gbor Kaani had accused the ex-police officer of being a patron of Deebam in Kaani. The accusation was said to have been made during a peace meeting held few weeks ago at the Catering Rest House, Bori as part of the efforts to end the crises in the area. The Deewell group alleged that the ex-cops had used Deegbam cultists, allegedly aided by policemen, to lunch attacks on them, burning their houses in Gbor Kaani. Their parents and relations were also chased out of their community. “It was because of this that the Deewell launched a counter attack to reclaim their territory,” it was disclosed.

The peace effort was allegedly frustrated by the same alleged sponsor when it was resolved that the community would resort to the use of juju to bring peace and to deal with alleged trouble- makers. A source disclosed that it had already been agreed by the community that when the meeting would be reconvened again, they would invoke a powerful juju round both teyor and Gbor kaani so that the juju would kill anybody who would rise up again to involve himself or herself in cultismn. Rather than following up on the peace initiative, the accused who was the chairman of the meeting, was said to have been working hard to ensure that the meeting was never reconvened.

The renewed cult crises in Kaani community started in full force sometime in May, 2013.

On May 23, 2013, the leaders of Teyo had petitioned the Rivers State Commissioner of Police on the activities of the former police man including how he had allegedly mobilized youths to kill two members of the Teyor Kaani identified as Mpkai and Barile Barisua. Property worth millions of naira was also destroyed in the mayhem.

Again, on August 23, 2013, armed gang from Gbor Kaani invaded Teyor Kaani, shooting sporadically. Ngoddy Ngbogbara and Bariseredum Mgbarato were killed during the invasion.

The community of Teyor Kaani has remained a ghost town, even as Save-Our-Soul messages had been sent to the security authorities in the state. However, the ex-police officer was said to have boasted that he would use his connection in the police to ensure that the police would be prevented from intervening and invariably stopping the rampaging cultists. The Bori Divisional Police Headquarters has accused by community sources of feeding the Police commissioner with wrong information, thereby preventing him from knowing the true situation in Kaani.
