Rivers: Ake-led faction hails ‘new PDP’; Obuah’s calls for arrest of Amaechi, other breakaway chieftains

The Godspower Ake-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Rivers state on Sunday rejoiced over the election of national leaders of another faction of the party.

It described as a new dawn the emergence of Abubakar Kawu Baraje as the new national chairman; Dr. Sam Sam Jaja as the Deputy National Chairman and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, National Secretary.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital and signed by the state Publicity Secretary, George Ukwuoma-Nwogba, Ake stated that the coming of the new executive was bringing to an end “the dark days of impunity, recklessness, confusion and division among party members.”

“The Peoples Democratic Party, Rivers State under the able leadership of Chief Godspower Umejuru Ake, MFR rejoices with our National Chairman, Abubakar Kawu Baraje, Dr. Sam Sam Jaja and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, National Deputy Chairman and Secretary respectively. We, as a party, affirm our total support and loyalty to you and all the members of your new executive committee. Your pedigree speaks volume as true party men.

“Therefore we believe that your tenure will usher in quality and purposeful leadership in our great party. Gone are the dark days of impunity, recklessness, confusion and division among party members. Your coming at this challenging times in the life of our party is highly commendable because there’s no better time than now when our party and nascent democracy is constantly drifting into anarchy.”

Meanwhile, another faction led by Felix Obuah, has congratulated the newly-elected Deputy National Chairman of the party,Prince Uche Secondus.

The party in a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media to the Rivers State Chairman of the party, Jerry Needam, described the election of Secondus as well deserved and a reward for years of commitment and loyal service to the PDP.

He said with the long years of service of Prince Uche Secondus in the PDP and his wealth of experience and fear of God, the party has no doubt in his ability to deliver.

Needam, while reacting to the emergence of a parallel PDP, said the breakaway members are bent on destroying the party before joining their “members and colleagues in the All Progressives Congress, the Voice of the People and the Peoples Democratic Movement.”

He called them cowards and advised them to quit completely, rather than stay in the PDP under the guise of championing democratic course.

Continuing, the statement said “Today we have again been vindicated that all Amaechi wants is his personal 2015 vice presidential ambition.

“The Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party would resist any attempt by Amaechi and his cohorts to destroy the PDP.

“In 2009, Amaechi arrested prominent leaders of the party that formed a factional PDP, we therefore call for his arrest and others associated with this shameful act of factionalization in the PDP.”
