ASUU Vows To Continue Action

Even as the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) vowed to continue their industrial action, the authorities of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology has declared that lecturers of the institution are not on strike.

In an interview with The Tide, the institution’s deputy Registrar, Public Relations, Mr Desmond Nwosu said lecturers of the state-owned university are not on strike as normal academic activities are going on without any disruption.

He said lecturers of the institution are teaching and students are fully on campus attending classes without any hiccups.

He said welfare of the academic staff of the institution are well taken care of by the authorities of the institution and the state government.

Nwosu said the state government adequately makes provision for the funding of the institution.

He commended the lecturers for their consideration of the students academic future and the overall interest of the educational system of the state to shun the ASUU national strike.

However, all efforts by The Tide to speak with the ASUU chairman at the University, Dr Felix Igwe proved abortive, as  SMS message sent to his mobile phone were not replied.

Meanwhile, the National leadership of ASUU has said the strike action continues despite federal government’s efforts to broker truce with the union.

The National President of ASUU, Dr Umar Fagge said the federal government must implement the content of the agreement signed with the union, before the union can call off the industrial action.

The union insists that the federal government implement the agreement as a condition before ASUU can call off the strike action and normal academic activities resume in our tertiary institutions,” he said.

He said the ASUU’s action was necessitated by the government reneging on the agreement signed with the union.
