Shell’s Intention is to Throw Ogoni into Deep Crisis

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People says the intention of the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Nigeria’s affiliate of global oil giant, Royal Dutch Shell is to throw the Ogoni community into deep crisis to facilitate it’s return plan to the area.

Speaking yesterday in Bori, Chairman of the MOSOP Kingdom Coordinators Forum and member of MOSOP Executive Committee, Jonah Frank said Shell has been known for sponsoring crisis in Ogoni in their usual ‘divide and rule’ strategy and that is the same strategy they are using now to push their way into the area.

“The fact is that the Ogoni people do not want Shell’s return” Mr Frank Jonah Said.

He further said it is unfortunate that Shell is not a responsible company with conscience and so will always act against the wishes of the Ogoni people. It is more worrisome considering the fact that Shell’s re-entry plan into Ogoni is backed by heavy military force of the Nigerian government.

“Nigeria does not care and Ogoni lives mean nothing to them. Their greatest concern is increased oil revenue even at the expense of people’s lives” he said.

Mr. Frank recounted Shell’s sponsorship of violence in Ogoni, the mindless killings of innocent Ogoni people and the deprivation of oil benefits in over 30 years of active mining in the area and called on the international community to put pressure on Shell to respect the wishes of the Ogoni people.
