The Murder of Ken Saro-Wiwa, 8 Others Must be Revisited – MOSOP

A new dimension had been added to the issue of reconciliation between the Nigerian government and the Ogoni people over a possible resumption of oil exploration activities in Ogoniland. The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People says the murder of Ken Saro-wiwa and eight other Ogonis in 1995 must be revisited.

MOSOP spokesman and Chairman of MOSOP Kingdom Coordinators Forum Jonah Frank made the declaration today in Bori insisting that the killings were most wicked and unexpected from the Nigerian government at the time. Mr. Frank Jonah said a proper thing for the government to do is to exonerate the “Ogoni 9” and punish those who connived with Shell in incriminating the Ogoni 9 to have them killed.

He said, we want fresh investigations regarding the role of Shell in the murder of the 9 Ogonis in 1995. We also want investigations into the role of the panel members in the killing of our leaders in 1995.

“These are basic conditions the government will need to satisfy for MOSOP to engage it in any form of negotiation regarding oil exploration in Ogoniland. Ogoni people value life and we have not recovered from the shock of the killings even after over 17 years” Mr. Jonah said.

Jonah, a very outspoken MOSOP leader maintained that “Apart from the issues of environmental protection, compensation for the destruction of the environment and the creation of a Bori state, MOSOP want those involved in the killing of the nine Ogonis in 1995 to be brought to justice. “These are very fundamental issues for the Ogoni people and they are very critical to avoid any confrontation with whoever may want to steal the Ogoni oil or force his way into the area without the consent of the Ogoni people.

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People have been a leading campaigner of the rights of the Ogoni people and the entire Niger Delta for a just and fair treatment.
