Activists of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) have called on the people of Ogoni in Rivers State to boycott the 2013 Ogoni Day celebration in protest against the planned invasion of the area during the celebrations.
The activists, under the auspices of MOSOP Kingdom Coordinators’ Forum, alleged that there were plans by prominent politicians in the area to use security agents to clampdown on the activists believed to have refused to participate in the election of the pan-Ogoni organisation.
In a statement signed by Chairman of the forum and MOSOP Coordinator in Nyokhana Kingdom, Mr. Frank Jonah appealed to the people of the area to sit at home during the January 4, 2013 event in protest against the planned clampdown.
The statement read in parts; “On December 15, 2012, Chairman of the so-called MOSOP Electoral Committee, Mr. Maxwell Nwigogbor, addressed a gathering of Ken Khana people in the home of Mr Moses Damgbor in Nwiyaakara community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.
“In his address, he said that a high profile politician with the support of the Rivers State government has guaranteed the deployment of 200 soldiers and Mobile Policemen to Ogoniland between December 31, 2012 and January 4, 2013.
“He also said that he has been assured of a position in the Rivers State House of Assembly in 2015. Mr Nwigogbor said that the purpose is to brutally clampdown on MOSOP activists who have refused to participate in the show of shame called MOSOP elections. MOSOP has gone to court to seek a legal remedy to the situation and the court has issued an order restraining the electoral committee from proceeding with the elections.
