29 DECMOSOP Renews Call for Saro-Wiwa’s Exoneration, Demands Ogoni State Creation
The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has again called on President Goodluck Jonathan to initiate a reconciliatory process in Ogoni by exonerating Ken Saro-Wiwa and the 8otherss hanged by the government on November 10, 1995 and ensuring the creation of an Ogoni state to speed up development in the area. Chairman of MOSOP Kingdom Coordinators Forum Jonah Frank made the call in Bori yesterday.Mr Frank said a state for the Ogoni people and the exoneration of Ken Saro-Wiwa and 8 others will usher in a process of reconciliation which will ultimately resolve the Ogoni problem. He noted that the Ogoni problem has become so precarious because the government failed to act early against Shell’s corporate irresponsibility thereby allowing a high level of impunity in the way oil firms do business in the entire Niger Delta.
The failure of government to act and ensure a decent and healthy mode of operations for oil firms is today costing the government huge sums in the Amnesty programme, he said.
Mr Frank noted this government has a chance to usher in a better society by applying strict penalties for environmental degradationand reviewing all laws that impede the development of a fair and just society.
