Oil Spill: Ogoni Community, Families Drag Shell To Court

The people of Kegbara-Dere community in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State have dragged oil giant, Shell, to court over hydrocarbon contamination of their environment arising from the company’s questionable oil production activities in the community.

Also, the Gberebeedom and Keregbor families in Kegbara-Dere community are in the same court against Shell after their many appeals to the oil giant to address their plight emanating from its operational activities failed to yield any positive results.

They are demanding the sum of $321.1 million as compensation from the oil firm, representing loss of farming rights, air pollution and general damages.

The community and the two families in their suits, FHC/PHC/CS/133/2012, FHC/PHC/CS/139/2012, and FHC/PHC/CS/141/2012, respectively, through their counsel, Dr. Amaechi Nwaiwu, SAN, are collectively praying the court to grant their prayers.

The prayers of the community and the families include proper remediation and restoration of their environment, adequate compensation, provision of alternative source of drinking water and relocation of the manifold which current location is at very close proximity to inhabited areas of the community.
