Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has directed the immediate stoppage of bulk deductions from workers salaries. He gave the directive during meeting with civil servants at the State Secretariat Complex in Port Harcourt. Rt Hon Amaechi, who explained that the deductions were meant for the Social Service Levy and Contributory Pension Scheme, apologised to Civil Servants for the negative impact it had on them, stressing that such deductions would now be effected monthly rather than in arrears as was the case before.
The essence of the Social Service Levy is to fund the free health care and education programmes of the State Government aimed at assisting the poor in society, the State Chief Executive explained.
Governor Amaechi noted that the amount expected to be raised from the deductions is N4 billion and appealed for understanding and cooperation, pointing out that the Social Service Levy would be paid by all residents in the State and not exclusively by Civil Servants.
He announced that the new Secondary School in Eleme would commence academic activities next session with 700 children while 13,000 teachers would be recruited for the new model schools, adding that those to be recruited would be retrained for six months to adequately prepare them for the task ahead.
Earlier, the Head of Service, Barr. Samuel LongJohn said, the Civil Service, which is the engine room of government, would strive to perform optimally to ensure that the objectives of government were achieved.
The meeting, which featured questions and answers session, was attended by members of the State Executive Council, Permanent Secretaries, Directors and Civil Servants
