Heavy attack was launched on a gathering of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People at Beeri community on Saturday September 1, 2012. The gathering was one of the regular meetings of members of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People in the area.
At about 2.15pm, a gang of armed men swooped on the venue which scared the people into running for their lives. Many of the attendants at the meeting especially women incurred injuries while trying to escape.
It is of interest that some of the members of the attacking gang were identified. On investigation, some of the attackers admitted that they have been sent by one police Sergent with the state CID Port Harcourt named Keka Mawo. The reason for the attack was revealed that government agents had perceived that a meeting of MOSOP at Beeri would mobilize protest against the killings and destruct ions in Sogho communities in Nyokhana. It was also revealed that the attack received impetus from the house of Assembly member representing Khana Constituency 11, who himself holds central stake in fronting the banana plantation experiment in Ogoniland.
The fear is high, that this undemocratic and criminal disposition of government and its agents is capable of provoking serious crises in Ogoniland.
The tears and sorrows of killings and destruct ions inflicted on Sogho is very heavy in the heart of all well meaning Ogoni person. The Frenchman Napoleon Bonaparte had said “If they want Peale, nations should avoid the pin-pricks that precede cannon-shots.”
Is government about to push the Ogoni people into fighting themselves? Is another version of Gboko Haram been introduced in Rivers State?
Good care need to be taken not to add a new dimension to the already deteriorating security situation in Nigeria.
The source of insecurity in Ogoniland is well known to all. It is instrumented by agencies of government. It is imperative for the authorities of the Nigeria Police to investigate how its personnel, a Sergent could become a youth leader and offering to be used in attacks on local community groups. It is urgent for the Nigeria Police to take action and check the excesses of its men to save its image.
