Fiscal Federalism Will Address Lack of Economic Diversification – Rivers Deputy Speaker

The Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and member representing Khana Constituency 11, Hon.Leyii Kwanee has called for fiscal federalism as a panacea to addressing the problem of lack of economic diversification and enhancement of revenue generation plaguing the nation.

Hon. Kwanee was speaking while responding to questions from newsmen on arrival in Port Harcourt from the Advocacy workshop on Economic Diversification and Enhanced Revenue Generation organized by the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission in Delta State. The Deputy Speaker said fiscal federalism would encourage states and local governments in the country to harness resources in their locality pointing out that this was the secret of the spate of development enjoyed in the 60’s.

The Deputy Speaker who represented the Speaker at the occasion, further said that the need for fiscal federalism which will lead to diversification was imperative considering the demand of the increasing population on Nigeria’s oil and gas resources.

He condemned a situation where the three tiers of government depend solely on allocation from the federation account for government business adding that such is an aberration.

He  said that the state Assembly will continue to give support to the state governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi through the instrumentality of legislation in order to create an enabling environment for business to grow in the state.
He added that it will also employ the oversight function in order to improve the quality of life of the people of the state.
