Poem: The Shadow By Komene Famaa

The Shadow

(By Komene Famaa)

Though I forget for a moment

You remain still and firm

Though I travel at random

You follow me like my dog

Sometimes barking, playing with its tale

On early morning or evening walks

You visit me silently

Even in my dreams

Trying to imitate all that I do

As I lift my left leg you lift yours also

Sometimes you made me appear taller

Than what I am really is

But you totally remain dark in colour,

Obscure and full of energy and strength

I couldn’t understand your desire

Don’t you know I am leaving

Beyond this line

To search for the Golden “Loo”[deer]

I don’t know the place my heart yearned

May be it is a Wiiebiemaa, WiiBani or Wiidaanam

The birds playing freely in the sky

Shall take shelter at last

In the thickly covered leaves of tree

But where are you, oh sun

Oh Mother Earth

For whose sake it is

A drop of water from Maa Needam

Long to merge with the ocean

But where is my goal

In this journey to Kale without a canoe

I have taken a step however

Beyond the line

When I stoop you make me short

And stoop also

When I quicken my steps

You quicken yours also

When I run

You run as well

Like a kangaroo in the wild

In far away Australia

A country where I had a face to face contact

With this phenomenon and these animals

Australia is a country

With multiple climatic zones like the US

When I disappear you equally disappear too

Where are you, shadow of the day?

Let me await you

With memories of a past life

Unable to reach the land and dreams of my past life

And land in tropical Ogoniland

Where shadows are noticed in both

Day and Night during sunshine and moonlight

We go to our farms during the day

While we play at night in the moon light period

At night we see in the moon an old woman

Axing wood in the moon

This image is always glaring at night noticed by all children playing under the moon light beam while other traditional night dances are carried out too.

Night life is always as busy as daylight activities

Let it be swallowed by the hungry darkness

Which bring abrupt end to night activities.

Let these simple waves of rhythm

Be merged with anxious space

I shall wait for you

At the last boundary of the universe

Eagerly when you re-appear again
