MANAGING Director and Editor-in-Chief of Nigerian Compass Newspaper, Mr Sina Kawonise, has described the agitation for secession by some Nigerian ethnic nationalities as a product of failed leadership.
Kawonise, who disclosed this while featuring on a programme of the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), in Ibadan, on Saturday, called on the Federal Government to urgently address the issue.
He described the agitation for self determination and independence of some ethnic groups in the country, including the Ogonis, through the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), Igbos, through the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), the Yorubas, through the Odu’a Peoples Congress (OPC), the Egbesu Boys, the Niger Delta Volunteer Front, and others as a manifestation of the fissiparous tendency in the people.
Kawonise said “failure of leadership is grossly responsible for the crisis, because the people, who are crying for secession, believe that if their people were in authorities, things would be better for them. If they are autonomous, many progressive things would be attracted to them.”
Using Ogun State as a case study of some people clamouring for Ijebu state because of their belief that they were being marginalsed in the political calculation of the state, the former Commissioner for Information in the immediate past administration of Governor Gbenga Daniel said the Ogoni people were also clamouring for control of the oil in their region, as well as enjoyment of the derivation fund from the Federal Government.
He, however, said secession or taking up of arms was not the solution to Nigeria’s problems, while he advised the aggrieved people to rather create positive attitude, as the government also give every region its fair share.
